irido is part of my thesis : An investigation on Transformation Design in Conventional Recording Studios
Key Objective : Enhancing experience with multimodal stimulus (auditory, visual, olfactory) and incorporating ecology into the design.
- Keywords : Sonic Crystal, Acoustics Aesthetics, Circular Acoustics, Auralization
- The name of irido stems from the latin word : iridophore, referring to its capability reflecting sound back at different wavelengths$\pod \lambda$ and possibly in different polarities.$\pod \phi$
- Dimension : 1.8x1.5x2m
- Material : Reclaimed wood, raw steel, hemp rope
Technically it has different contributions :
- Insertion Loss in Near Field condition
- Diffuse Field in Far Field condition
Its effectiveness is quantified by simulation
Artistically it’s a Multi-sensory installation (Visual, Auditory, Olfactory) with Ecology in Mind.
Its experience is evaluated by Artist in Residence

Optimize experience (Gezelligheid)
- How environment changes artist’s behaviour (Performance)
Volumetric (not surface) diffuser to preserve energy
- A far cry from conventional absorption based barriers
Incorporating greenery / Ecology
- Upcycling natural materials with greenery incorporated into the acoustic package
Design for Disassembly (LEGO) Reuse, not down-cycled
- Providing Ikea like modular components
Variable Acoustics (empowerment)
- By altering irido, one is able to leverage the acoustic effect for insertion loss and or alternative creative purposes. </aside>

2D plots below simulate a spherical radiation source (i.e. a Drummer) and on the other side a vocalist / guitarist would appreciate great insertion loss to be able to hear themselves better as well as for engineers have decent separation (off-axis rejection) in their recordings.
